Congressman Andy Barr (R KY): Holding the IRS Accountable‏

Knowing of your interest in the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) alleged systematic targeting of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status, I wanted to send you an update regarding  the subsequent congressional actions taken to hold IRS officials accountable.  I hope you find this update informative. 

In February 2012, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform began investigating allegations that the IRS systematically targeted and unfairly scrutinized conservative groups and organizations seeking 501(c)(4) tax-exempt status.  As you may know, Section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code permits incorporation of organizations that meet certain criteria and focus on advancing “social welfare” goals.  Organizations granted 501(c)(4) status are not subject to federal income tax.  However, documents leaked from the IRS indicate that senior IRS officials, and specifically Director of IRS Exempt Organizations Lois Lerner, were actively discriminating against applications from conservative organizations by obstructing and or delaying the 501(c)(4) approval of these groups.

I believe the American people deserve fair and equal treatment from their government regardless of their political views.  The IRS failed to live up to this standard when it targeted these groups based on their names and ideology.  In response to these revelations, committees of the U.S. House of Representatives have painstakingly gathered information about the IRS’s targeting.  Committee investigators have interviewed dozens of IRS and Treasury Department employees, analyzed hundreds of thousands of documents, issued two reports, and held multiple hearings on the scandal.  While we know a lot about the IRS’s misconduct, key questions remain unanswered.

For these reasons, on May 9, 2014, I voted in favor of holding Ms. Lerner in contempt of Congress for her refusal to comply with a subpoena issued by the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.  Ms. Lerner’s testimony remains critical to the Committee’s investigation and I believe her cooperation is an important step toward moving this forward and restoring the American people’s confidence in the IRS.  Our citizens must be reassured that government officials are held accountable when they abuse their power and betray public trust by depriving Americans of their Constitutional right to participate in our democracy, regardless of their political beliefs.  Please know that I will continue to monitor the ongoing investigation in the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

I couldn’t believe it when Glenn said, “Matt Bevin is the closest thing to a founder I’ve ever met in a candidate, with the possible exception of Mike Lee.” 

Wow!  I was moved to hear him make such a comparison.  What an inspirational thing for Glenn to say.  I am humbled to be put in the same category with someone as principled as Senator Mike Lee, but to be compared to our Founding Fathers… was quite simply overwhelming.  

I am honored that Glenn thinks that way about me, but it’s not just me. It’s the patriots, like you and me, across this land rising up and taking a stand for what we believe in.  We are at a pivotal time in our nation’s history and I am compelled to do all I can to restore this nation to greatness.

I first became aware of the ratio of Blacks to Whites committing crimes in the late 1960s. I was a darkroom technician at a commercial photo lab owned by a deputy sheriff. The owner had the contract to develop and print all of the “mug shots” for a large county sheriff’s department. This was my job the first thing every morning. I was totally amazed by the number of crimes committed by Blacks as opposed to Whites !!!

I understand that not all people initially arrested and photographed are guilty – but even if HALF are innocent, the ratio is STILL THE SAME !!!

Government Opening Free Gas Stations in Poor Neighborhoods

As the battle over Obama care rages in Washington, the White House is quietly using a little known provision of the law to roll out a nationwide network of free gas stations for minorities and the poor. According to a report in The Detroit News this morning, the administration is using its authority under the Affordable Care Act to “improve transportation routes to hospitals” to dispense gasoline free of cost in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
 
The $2 billion-a-year program aims to distribute40 million gallons of free gasoline each year through 70 new gas stations constructed in major metropolitan areas. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHS) will be responsible for operating the network, whose first station opened yesterday in Detroit.
 
“It’s not something we’re publicizing very much, for obvious reasons,” explains Dori Salcido, assistant DHS secretary for public affairs. “But under the law we are well within our rights to offer this service, and we think it’s good public policy.
 
“How are people supposed to get to the doctor’s office if they don’t have gas in their cars? Health insurance is worthless if you can’t make your appointment. This is just another fine example of government stepping in and solving big problems.”
 
No Gas for You
Although some developing oil-rich nations like Venezuela and Indonesia subsidize gasoline for the poor, the practice has never before been tried in the United States. The plans are proving controversial with some taxpayers who are loathe to see their money go to subsidize others.
 
“So basically I’m being punished for not living in the ghetto,” says Colin Blair, a white person from the affluent Detroit
suburb of Farmington Hills. “I have three kids and a mortgage. Life isn’t cheap for me either. I could use some free gasoline too.”
 
An investigation into the station’s operations, however, reveals that Blair is unlikely to be able to use the service.� Supposedly access to the station is determined by income,” says Ebony Jackson, manager of the first Obama station. “But it’s pretty unrealistic to do an income check on each and every driver. So what we do is basically let all the black people pump for free, and charge all the white people the market rate.”

The Obama stations scandal was uncovered by Nolan Finley, a conservative Detroit News columnist widely lauded for his groundbreaking expose’ on Obama phones. Finley says the blatant racial bias in the program is only one of its many outrageous aspects. “The stations have Obama campaign logo on them and giant photos of the president,” he explains.”He’s trying to buy votes ahead of the midterm elections. This is something you normally only see in third world countries. I’ve never been more scared for our democracy.”

Sen. Rand Paul Opposes the Nomination of David Barron

President Obama has nominated David Barron, a Harvard law professor and former acting assistant attorney general, to a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.

While he was an official in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, Mr. Barron wrote at least two legal memos justifying the execution of American citizens abroad without a trial.

On April 30, I wrote to the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, urging him to delay this nomination, pending a court-ordered disclosure of the first memo I knew about. Since that letter, I have learned more. The American Civil Liberties Union sent a letter to all senators on May 6, noting that in the view of the Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman, Dianne Feinstein, “there are at least eleven OLC opinions on the targeted killing or drone program.” It has not been established whether Mr. Barron wrote all those memos, but we do know that his controversial classified opinions provided the President with a legal argument and justification to target an American citizen for execution without a trial by jury or due process.

Since then, I’ve read David Barron’s memos concerning the legal justification for killing an American citizen overseas without a trial or legal representation, and I am not satisfied. 

While the President forbids me from discussing what is in the memos, I can tell you what is not in the memos.

There is no valid legal precedent to justify the killing of an American citizen not engaged in combat. In fact, one can surmise as much because the legal question at hand has never been adjudicated. Therefore, I shall not only oppose the nomination of David Barron, but will filibuster.

On Monday, I issued the following letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announcing my intent to object to the pending nominations to the Federal Reserve System unless S. 209, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act, is also considered.
 
The American people have a right to know what this institution is doing with the nation’s money supply. The Federal Reserve does not need prolonged secrecy-it needs to be audited, and my bipartisan Federal Reserve Transparency Act will do just that.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church were perplexed Friday evening after they were met by counter protesters with a sign that expressed condolences for the recent loss of their church’s leader, Fred Phelps.

“Sorry for you loss,” the sign read.

Westboro members, proudly displaying anti-gay, anti-solider signs, were protesting outside popular singer Lorde’s concert when they were confronted with the sign.

It did not appear they knew how to react.

“I don’t even know what they mean by what they are saying,” one member told KSHB-TV.

Another sign displayed by the counter protesters read, “Live your life and be awesome.”

We realized that it wasn’t so much about antagonizing them, but sending out the counter message that we are here for people who need that message and need some positivity,” one member of the group explained.

“Dear Friend,

In the past, you have contacted me to express your concerns regarding the aftermath of the terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya. I want to take this opportunity to update you on my thoughts regarding this important issue. It is a privilege to serve the people of Kentucky’s Sixth Congressional District in Washington, D.C., and I hope you will find this update informative.

The American people deserve answers about the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack on our consulate facility in Benghazi, Libya that left four Americans dead, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. While in the immediate aftermath of the attack, the Obama Administration sought to connect the events to a street demonstration arising from a YouTube video, and worked to downplay the fact that it was terrorism; the actual circumstances surrounding what happened have begun to come into focus. However, many questions remained, which is why my colleagues in the House and I continue to press to get answers. 

For over a year now, committees of the U.S. House of Representatives have been and continue to thoroughly investigate the events before, during, and after the attacks. Committee investigators have interviewed dozens of individuals including State Department and CIA personnel on the ground in Benghazi during the attacks, issued nine subpoenas, held more than 30 hearings and briefings, and reviewed tens of thousands of documents, many of them classified.

I have personally taken action by cosponsoring H. Res. 36, introduced by Rep. Frank Wolf (VA-10), which would establish a special Select Committee to further investigate the events that led to the attack in Benghazi. I believe that advancing this measure will be vital to getting the American people the unvarnished answers they deserve about why four Americans are dead and what decisions were made by the Administration at the time. 

You can follow the progress of these investigations and actions taken in the House of Representatives at GOP.gov, the website for the House Republican Majority. The House is committed to bringing the facts straight to the American people with unprecedented access to evidence. Republican Matt Bevin Receives Endorsement from Northern Kentucky Mayor

 Saying small businesses are the country’s backbone, the mayor of Newport, Ky. is endorsing Republican Matt Bevin for U.S. Senate in the upcoming primary election.

Republican Jerry Peluso was first elected mayor of the Northern Kentucky city, which sits across from Cincinnati, in 2008. He previously served on the city commission and as vice mayor.

In a news release, he says Bevin understands the challenges of running multiple businesses and how they work.

“As someone who knows firsthand about operating expenses such as insurance, taxes, utilities, and state and federal regulations, Matt Bevin will support small business by fight for their survival,” Peluso says.

The nod from a Kentucky Republican official is an important in-state pick up for the Bevin campaign, which is trailing McConnell by double-digits in most polls. Bevin has support from over a dozen Tea Party groups in the state and outside groups like the Senate Conservatives Fund and FreedomWorks.

“I am honored by Mayor Peluso’s endorsement and support of our campaign efforts in northern Kentucky,” Bevin said in a statement. “I appreciate all he does for small businesses in Newport. I’m honored to have this lifelong Kentuckian’s support and grateful that he’s joining our team.”

For most of the primary battle Bevin has mercilessly attacked McConnell’s record for not being conservative enough with Tea Party groups by his side.

McConnell’s allies are likely to pounce on Peluso’s Democratic ties, but the nod demonstrates Bevin’s business acumen could be an asset for voters beyond the Tea Party base.

House Votes To STOP IRS

Last week was a good week. We came one step closer toward beating the IRS.

You know the IRS proposed new regulations that will make it impossible for conservative groups to make their voice heard. And you know that if these rules are enacted, they will do enormous damage to our movement.

But you weren’t intimidated. Patriots like you submitted almost one hundred thousand comments to the IRS’s website. You forced the bureaucrats to listen. They know you care about your constitutional rights.

And it’s because of your activism the House of Representatives passed a law this week to delay the IRS’s speech-crushing regulations for one year. Every single Republican voted for the bill, and 14 Democrats joined them. 

It wouldn’t have happened without your effort. Thousands of patriots called their representatives and demanded Congress put a stop to the IRS’s intimidation. You got on the phone, and your representatives listened.

It’s a shame more Democrats don’t support this issue. Stopping the IRS’s suppression of free speech should be a bipartisan issue. Every politician in Washington should oppose this radical clampdown on basic, constitutional rights.

Now the fight goes to the Senate. We have to keep up the pressure to stop the IRS.

U.S. economic conditions in 2014 continue to languish, as millions of Americans remain jobless. Seven economic facts underscore America’s increasingly dire economic outlook.

1. A Record 91.8 Million Americans Are No Longer in the Workforce

The latest Labor Department figures reveal that a record 91.8 million Americans are no longer in the U.S. labor force. To be included in the Labor Department’s calculations for this statistic, a person must be 16 years or older, a civilian, not in an institution (such as prison), and someone who has not looked for a job in the last four weeks.

Minorities have been hit especially hard. As Dean Baker of the Center for Economic and Policy Research noted to PBS, last month’s jobs report also saw “the lowest rate of labor force participation among African-American men since we have kept that count. So that was really striking.”

According to the U.S. Census, 317 million people live in the United States.

2. Since Jan. 2009, the Number of Jobless Working-Age Americans Has Risen 9.6 Million People

As Michael Snyder notes:

The number of working age Americans that do not have a job has increased by nearly 10 million since Barack Obama first entered the White House. In January 2009, the number of “officially unemployed” workers plus the number of Americans “not in the labor force” was sitting at a grand total of 92.6 million. Today, that number has risen to 102.2 million. That means that the number of working age Americans that are not working has grown by close to 10 million since Barack Obama first took office.

3.  47.4 Million Americans Now Rely on Food Stamps

The Department of Agriculture, which oversees the food stamp program, says that 47,415,895 Americans – roughly one out of every six Americans – now receives food stamps. Indeed, for the last fifteen consecutive months, the number of individuals has consistently stayed above 47 million, a first in U.S. history. Food stamp enrollments, which are considered an indicator of economic distress, have skyrocketed in recent years as the Obama administration has loosened eligibility requirements and aggressively promoted enrollments. In January 2009, 31.9 million people received food stamps.

4. A Record 10.98 Million Americans Now Receive Disability Checks

 Social Security data reveal that a record 10,988,269 Americans now receive a monthly check for an average $1,146.43. Several recent studies and investigations have revealed that the nation’s disability program is rife with fraud and abuse.

 When health care for disabled workers is included, U.S. taxpayers now spend $260 billion a year funding the disability program – a figure that exceeds the amount spent on food stamps and welfare combined.

 5.  Nearly One in Three Americans Fell into Poverty Between 2009-2011

 A new Census Bureau report released last week found that 31.6% of Americans fell beneath the federal poverty line for at least two months between 2009 to 2011, a 4.5% increase over the 2005 to 2007 period.

 6.  42% of Americans Believe Themselves Worse Off Financially than a Year Ago

Gallup on Wednesday released its latest “Mood of the Nation” poll that found that 42% of Americans say they are worse off financially than they were a year ago, a number that has grown over the last two years.

 7. U.S. Debt Now Stands at over $17.3 Trillion

 America’s federal debt explosion continues unabated. In Jan. 2009, the national debt was $10.626 trillion. Today, America’s national debt stands at over $17,300,000,000,000.
